LGBTQ+ Healthcare: Unique Challenges and Solutions

Welcome to the first installment of our series dedicated to exploring the distinctive health challenges faced by various groups in our community. Today, we turn our attention to the LGBTQ+ community and the unique health obstacles they encounter.

As we celebrate and honor the LGBTQ+ community in June, it's essential to acknowledge the unique health challenges they face. While there have definitely been strides in increasing awareness and understanding of these issues, there is still much work to be done.

Community health centers like PureView have a role to play in supporting the unique health needs of our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors, including listening and learning about their experiences.

It's crucial to note that the health challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community go beyond mental and physical health issues. Members of this community often experience discrimination and stigma, leading to further health disparities. Fear of discrimination from healthcare providers or lack of access to LGBTQ+ friendly healthcare facilities may make them hesitant to seek medical care, resulting in delayed or inadequate treatment for both physical and mental health concerns.

Moreover, LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to experience homelessness, poverty, and food insecurity, which can negatively impact overall health and well-being. These social determinants of health can exacerbate existing health issues and make it harder for individuals to access the care they need to manage their health.

Creating a more inclusive and accepting environment for the LGBTQ+ community is key to improving the health outcomes of these individuals. This can include advocating for policies and legislation that protect their rights and ensure equal access to healthcare, housing, and other resources. The results of these endeavors would improve the health outcomes and overall well-being of our LGBTQ+ community members.

Ultimately, when it comes to health, we must all look out for each other, regardless of who we are or who we love. Let's keep an open mind, listen, learn, and support our neighbors as best we can. This is what being part of a community is all about.

PureView offers care to all individuals in our community, regardless of their background or ability to pay. To make an appointment, please call us at 406-457-0000.

Many people set unrealistic goals and have unrealistic expectations about weight loss. Making changes to your nutrition and seeing those changes takes time. There is no magic bullet or magic medication, and believing there is sets us up for failure. While some of the newer medications on the market have shown up to 15-20 % total body weight loss in short-term studies, participants also made diet and lifestyle changes.
